Pre-Kote is an Interlux primer used to help protect boat surfaces above the waterline. Before applying Interlux Pre-Kote Brightside you should prepare your surfaces. Interlux primer is safe to use on fiberglass, wood, and previously painted surfaces.

The application should be done with a brush, airless sprayer, or roller. Interlux primer is a high solid and heavy application that can cause solvent entrapment. It is recommended to apply 1-2 coats, depending on desired thickness. Make sure to correct surface imperfections before application. Sanding between each application is recommended for optimal application. Interlux Pre-Kote Brightside is available in quarts and gallons. Each gallon covers 450 sq/ft.

How To Apply Pre-Kote Primer

Interlux Pre-Kote is compatible with the following Interlux paints: Brightside, Premium Yacht Enamel, Interdeck, Bilgekote, and any single part finish. Do not use Perfection or any two-part catalyzed product over Pre-Kote. 

• Application Method: Airless Spray, Brush, Conventional Spray, Roller- Pressure Pot or Siphon Cup
• Number of Coats: 1-2 As Needed
• Dry Film Thickness per Coat: 2 mils (3.5 wet mils)
• Coverage: 450 sq. ft/gal.
• Application Temp: 50°F Min. / 95°F Max.
• Thinner: Brushing Liquid 333

Note: Pre-Kote must be sanded between coats.

Surface Preparation & Application

• Previously Painted Surfaces
• Sand old surfaces with 120 grit paper and remove sanding residue.
• Wipe with Brushing Liquid 333.
• Repair surface defects with Surfacing Putty.
• Sand surface, then wipe clean.
• Bare Wood
• Sand with 80 grit paper then wipe with Brushing Liquid 333.
• Repair surface defects with Surfacing Putty.
• For Plywood, follow the above instructions, then apply Inter-Prime Wood Sealer Clear 1026.
• For Mahogany, follow the above instructions, then apply Pre-Kote directly to the wood.
• Bare Fiberglass
• Wipe a small area with a clean rag that has been wetted with Fiberglass Solvent Wash 202.
• While surface is still wet, wipe with a clean, dry rag.
• Continue this process until the entire surface has been cleaned.
• Sand with 80 grit paper, then wipe with Fiberglass Solvent Wash 202.
• Repair surface defects with Watertite Filler.
• Sand surface, then wipe clean.

Application Information

Apply 1-2 coats depending on surface condition. Allow the necessary overcoating time between applications. Sand between primer coats with 120 grit paper until translucent. Remove sanding residue with a rag dampened with Brushing Liquid 333. Apply finish coats.

• Large surface imperfections should be filled prior to application.
• It is good practice to apply the finish enamel soon after sanding to avoid surface contamination.
• Refer to the application instructions PDF below for pressure and tip sizes for airless and conventional spray applications.
• Pre-Kote is a high solid primer. Avoid a heavy application as this may lead to solvent entrapment.
• Apply to clean, dry, properly prepared surfaces only.
