West System's 406 Colloidal Silica is used as an epoxy thickening additive with 105 Resin Epoxy. It helps the user control the viscosity and prevent epoxy runoff. Perfect for vertical and overhead joints. A strong filler that creates a smooth mixture made for epoxy bonding and filleting. The most versatile filler from West System the 406 can improve strength, consistency, and abrasion resistance. This all combines to give you a tough yet smooth surface. Available in off white color.
The 406 Colloidal Silica is great at bonding with fillets with epoxy. It creates an structural brace between the parts. Increases the joint bonding area. All while creating a strong and smooth surface area. Being an adhesive filler the 406 Colloidal Silica is suited for epoxy bonding situations, specifically with high density materials such as hardwoods or metals. Adhesive fillers cure to a hard and strong surface, while being more difficult to sand.
West System's 406 Colloidal Silica is perfect for color matching fillets. To do so first thicken an epoxy batch with 406 Colloidal Silica to a mayonnaise consistency. This should be a creamy and translucent white color. Then add wood sanding dust until you create a color to your liking. Adding a little sanding dust will result in a lighter colored epoxy while adding a lot will create a darker color.
When used alone the 406 Colloidal Silica will create a translucent white look that offsets nicely from the darkening effect of wet wood flour. This allows you to get a colored epoxy that nicely matches the tone of the wood. For best results use a varnished wood surface or an epoxy coated surface to see what the wood looks like as you try to color match. The epoxy's look while uncured is the same it will look after it finishes curing.
